Emotional Intensity & Self Regulation
Some children (and adults) are temperamentally more emotionally intense and experience emotions more powerfully with an intensity that is directed outwards or inwards. It can be a struggle when you have strong feelings. For children being able to identify and name feelings, express emotions safely rather than be overwhelmed by them, and know how to calm themselves down when upset or angry are all important skills for emotional resilience and healthy functioning. Research shows that emotional self regulation reduces aggression, anxiety and stress.
